Pre-Roll Equipment

Dodge The Hype: Tradeshow FOMA & Smart Pre-Roll Equipment Choices

You’ve been there. We’ve been there.

Standing on the tradeshow floor, watching the latest Pre Roll Machines in action, imagining your production line running at full speed. The demos are mesmerizing—the Automatic PRERoller 300 Joint Rolling Machine effortlessly filling Cones at lightning speed, the machines humming as they churn out hundreds of prerolls..

You Start Doing the Pre Roll Math in Your Head

You run the numbers… 1,500 prerolls an hour, 7.5 hour shifts… that’s over 11,000 prerolls a day. You divide that output by your per operator cost of $200 a day. We’re talking less than two cents per preroll! Meanwhile, you’re shelling out 45 cents a pop to a co-packer, or your trustworthy Knockboxes are churning out only a few hundred per day.

Man, that math hits hard. You’re looking at weekly, monthly production rates, and the wheels start turning: If I get another machine, hell, maybe a third one… Aye Dios Mio, that’s a game-changer!

You can almost taste the success. Production skyrocketing, profits flowing like a river, efficiency through the roof. It’s that sweet spot where you can just feel the business expanding, right? Hell, maybe I’ll jump into co-packing myself!

Your heart’s pounding, the cash flow feels almost tangible, and before you know it, you’re signing on the dotted line, barely glancing at the fine print. You drop the deposit, no hesitation—heck, you even scored that show special. No cap, you’re all in. You’ve made your move. Check Mate! Watch out Missouri, New Mexico, Massachusetts we’re coming!

Fast Forward 6 – 12 Months Later

Your old Knockboxes are still doing the heavy lifting. That shiny new pre-roll machine, which once dazzled you on the tradeshow floor, is now covered with a tarp collecting dust or as the picture below suggests, expensive shelving.

Knockboxes

You’re staring at a maintenance bill for equipment that’s barely seen use, and what was promised to be your productivity game-changer now feels more like a costly gamble. It works when it works, but that’s not the kind of reliability you need for scaling your pre-roll production.

Your projected ROI on this new machine seems more like a pipe dream. You’re sinking money into unplanned costs, and your pre-roll production isn’t keeping pace with your growing business needs. The shiny, automated pre-roll systems that promised to take you to the next level are now an obstacle to your success, not the solution you expected.

The math you ran in your head at the show was not even remotely close. The efficiency you imagined hasn’t materialized. Instead, you’re dealing with a laundry list of unforeseen issues.

  • Cones Don’t Fit: Your pre-roll machine isn’t compatible with your cones, causing bottlenecks and wasted time. You want to use glass tubes or other SKUs but you are locked into the machine company’s cone options only.

  • Unforeseen Add-Ons: You need de- humidifier to keep your cannabis fresh, a specialized grinder to mill material to dust,, and a more powerful air compressor to keep things running.

  • Surprise Infusion Kit: You find out you need an infusion kit to produce infused pre-rolls—an additional $45K and  another  ‘installation’.

  • Maria Can’t Handle It: Your production team is stretched thin—Maria from the production line can’t manage the new machine, so you have to hire an “engineer” just to baby sit your new paperweight..

You are f**king pissed.

At Hummingbird, we’ve been in your shoes—operators who’ve lived the grind. We didn’t just design a machine to sell; we built a system that solves the exact challenges we faced as operators. Now, as equipment suppliers, we’re here to help you avoid the Wawawiwa trap and make smart equipment choices that lead to sustainable success.

The Chemistry of the Wawawiwa Moment

It’s easy to see why we fall for the tradeshow dazzle. Our brains are wired to be drawn to novelty and speed. The rush? That’s dopamine doing its job, lighting up your senses, triggering that internal calculation of profit.

Dopamine is the brain’s “feel-good” neurotransmitter. It’s released when we experience something rewarding or exciting—like a high-speed demo at a tradeshow. When you see an automated Pre Roll Machine filling cones effortlessly or a Joint Roller producing perfect Tubes, your brain reacts. The more speed, the more excitement, the more dopamine floods your system. This biochemical process makes us associate the machine’s high speed with efficiency and profitability.

Your body reacts to the thrill of efficiency—automated processes that promise to do what once took hours, now done in minutes. But dopamine also causes us to overlook potential flaws, to equate the rush with success, and to disconnect from reality. The real question isn’t ‘How fast does it go or  How many prerolls can it do per hour.’

Real-World Questions to Ask Before You Buy

When you’re evaluating pre-roll equipment, don’t let the tradeshow dazzle fool you. A flashy demo is designed to impress, but it doesn’t show the equipment’s real-world performance. Before you sign any contracts, ask these essential questions to ensure you’re investing in equipment that will truly meet your operational needs:

1. Does This Pre Roll Machine Work with various Cones and Cone Sizes. If so, do you have a preference and why ?

Versatility is critical in pre-roll production. Your business won’t just stick to one type of pre-roll format—different product lines require different types of cones and tubes. You need equipment that can handle both Standard Bulk Cones andTubeswithout compromise.  A machine that accommodates both formats will save you time and money, offering seamless transitions between production runs without the need for constant reconfiguration.

Cone Supplier

Beware of the Middle Man Cone Supplier.

Margins are tight even for equipment suppliers. Supplying cones as part of ‘a package deal’ is a red flag. ‘Our cones work great on our machine’ is a telltale sign to stay away.

Why? The Middle Man Cone Supplier always looks for the best price. He bounces from Indian factory to Indian factory looking to pocket that extra half a penny. In the bulk cones business, they are guys are known as the Nickel Guys.

At Hummingbird, we are not aware of any Equipment Supplier that owns factories in India or Indonesia or China.

2. How much downtown between runs or strains?

A machine that demands constant reconfiguration for different sizes or strain types can quickly eat into your production time, costing you valuable hours. You need equipment that keeps your workflow seamless, minimizing interruptions and maximizing output.

If your machine can’t quickly adapt to different product formats, you’ll find yourself constantly playing catch-up. Reconfiguring equipment or cleaning between runs not only slows you down but also increases the potential for errors and inconsistencies. A truly flexible machine allows you to keep the pace up and your production line humming—whether you’re running Dogwalkers, 1-gram pre-rolls, or 2-gram blunts. This adaptability isn’t just a nice feature; it’s a necessity for scaling and staying competitive in the fast-moving cannabis market.

3. Will It Handle Sticky, Infused Material Without Jamming or should I plan now for purchasing additional equipment?

Infused pre-rolls are growing in popularity, but they can pose a challenge for machines. Sticky concentrates can easily jam equipment that isn’t designed to handle them. A machine that struggles with these materials isn’t just frustrating to operate—it can also lead to costly downtime.

Most machines currently on the market, including those from major players, were introduced in 2019/2020, well before infused pre-rolls became dominant. Their R&D focused primarily on vibratory systems and processing straight flower, not infused products.

When assessing equipment, always ask if it’s been tested with infused products. If a vendor isn’t willing to demonstrate the machine running with these materials in real-world conditions, proceed with caution

4. How Long Does It Take to Train Operators?

A common pitfall with complex machinery is the long training times required for operators. The quicker your operators can be trained, the sooner they’ll be able to operate the machine efficiently and without errors.

Look for a pre-roll solution that’s intuitive and doesn’t require extensive training. Machines that demand several days of instruction can slow your production speed, increase error rates, and ultimately add unnecessary overhead costs.

24/7 support sounds great, but it’s often a gimmick. What you really need is a machine that’s straightforward, reliable, and doesn’t require constant troubleshooting. When you invest in equipment, make sure it’s a solution that minimizes complexity and maximizes uptime—because time spent on the phone with support is time you’ll never get back.

5. If Your Demo Doesn’t Show the Machine in Real-World Conditions, Step Back.

Your production line isn’t going to operate in a controlled, demo-perfect environment. Factors like humidity, temperature fluctuations, material variability, and operator skill all affect machine performance.

If a vendor can’t demonstrate the machine running in real-world conditions—using a variety of materials—don’t commit. A machine that only works in ideal conditions is likely to cause more headaches than it’s worth.

6. Read the Fine Print

Before you sign that dotted line, make sure to read the fine print carefully. Many manufacturers sneak in clauses that place all expenses on you, the customer—from maintenance and shipping costs to repairs that arise from issues beyond your control. What seemed like an affordable machine could end up being a much bigger financial commitment once those hidden costs start stacking up.

And here’s the kicker—some contracts make it clear that any failures or problems are your responsibility, not theirs. If your machine breaks down or underperforms, you could be stuck with repair costs, long downtimes, and zero support. The vendor may dodge responsibility, leaving you holding the bag. Always review the fine print to ensure you’re not getting stuck with unexpected fees and liabilities that should be on the manufacturer, not you.
